Meet the Teachers: On Wednesday 22nd February, we will have an opportunity for parents and whanau to come along and meet your child’s teacher. This will not be a reporting session, but rather a chat about your child. Teachers will be able to clarify anything you were unsure of in the reports, or portfolios. Goals can be set for 2012. Children will attend these sessions with their parents. A booking slip accompanies this newsletter. We intend completing these informal interviews over one day. The school will not close. Students will work with me to enable all teachers to participate.

Interviews will start at 1pm and finish at 5.30pm. If you cannot attend, the teacher will review reports with students and set goals with them in class time.

Beach Education: You may be aware that New Zealand is experiencing a much higher degree of drowning; up 45 % in the last five years.  Beach Ed is aimed at teaching students water safety. Some of this programme is completed indoors; the remainder outdoors and in the water. Students need to bring their togs, towels, lunch and morning tea on these days, which will be held at Opunake Beach. Students require supervision while in the water. We also require parents or whanau to supervise students while we walk to the beach. If you can help, please complete the slip below.

Swimming: We are one of the very fortunate schools from around the country who still have our own pool. This pool costs a significant amount in running costs, but we are committed as a school and BOT to funding this initiative. Swimming is part of the curriculum at our school. Over the past two years teachers have completed significant professional development to ensure a good programme is put in place. Please ensure students have their togs and towels every day. We can only fit in five to six week’s of swimming, so let’s make it count!!!!

Awesome Term: Teachers have spent considerable time over the holidays planning an awesome term for students. Even though, it will be hard to top the wonderful opportunities that our students had last year!!! This term’s integrated unit is based on “Developing a Healthy Life Style.”  The unit is called “It’s All About Me.”  As part of this unit we will be having a day at the Opunake High School Pools on the  1st March.  This will take the place of school swimming sports. This day is intended as a “Fun Family Day Out.”

Fathers Required: We require fathers to help with the Boys Mentoring Programme this year. We are happy if some Dad’s can only be there for part of the programme. We can set up events, and then I can contact volunteers to see if you are available. Mr Frank has a heavy workload this year, but we are very keen to make this happen. If you have a skill or an interest that you can share with our boys, please fill in the slip below.
